In the summer of 2005 Jim Wallace, a well known member of the village, ran a football training programme for the youngsters of the village.
All the children who attended really enjoyed the course, but there was no oppurtunity within the village for them to carry on with their development.
A group of the childrens fathers decided that they would set up Somersham Town Youth FC, to enable the children to play for their village & not have to travel to surrounding teams.
Therefore last September six fathers began training sessions for the children who had attended the course, & others of similar ages.
The training takes place at the Somersham Town FC home ground every Sunday between 9.30am & 11.00am.
All the players have really enjoyed themselves, learning their skills & bonding into the team unit. (All the fathers have also enjoyed the training).
Our aim is to initially provide two teams playing in the Huntingdon Under 7's Mini-Soccer leagues, & to develop football within the village.
Would moving kids' football to a summer game help improve the development of young footballers?
Yes - better pitches mean a better chance to develop technique/skills
No - wouldn't make any real difference to development
Maybe - but I'd be worried about more injuries on firm pitches
